Born in Jharkhand, she was raised in a lower-middle-class family. Her father worked as an auto-rickshaw driver and her mother as a nurse at Ranchi Medical College.
She practiced archery using homemade bamboo bows and arrows. As a child, she was unable to afford expensive equipment, so she improvised with what she had.
Today, Deepika is ranked as the world’s top archer and has earned herself a Padma Shri and an Arjuna Award.
She started archery when she was eight years old and was fascinated by the sport.
Her parents could not afford the costs of professional archery training, so they made their own bamboo bows.
