Kang was born in Clarkston, Georgia, to South Korean immigrants. He moved to Gainesville, Georgia, where he lived for a while.He was raised by his Korean mother and African American stepfather, who were both from the same country. Five years after high school, he moved to Barstow, CA.

Kang went to school at the University of California, Riverside.

In college, he chose acting over law school because his parents were worried about how few Asian Americans were on TV and how hard it was to get a job in America.
