Tanuja has three sisters. The oldest sister is Nutan. Nutan started her acting career at the age of 14 in the 1950s. Before she was 18 years old, she won several Filmfare awards for her performance.
During her childhood, Tanuja studied in Switzerland. When she was a teenager, she left school and became a full-time actress. After Tanuja married filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee in 1973, she began working less. However, she continued her film career.
At the age of 17, she starred in her first movie as a lead actress. Her role was named Baby Tanuja. Since then, she has appeared in many Bollywood films, including Saathiya (2002), Rajkumari (1970), Anubhav (1973), and Deya Neya (1963).

When Tanuja was a child, her family was in a financial crisis. Her parents separated. While she was a teenager, her mother directed her and her sister in a film. They later had a successful career as Bollywood actors.
After Tanuja was married, she took a break from films. However, she later returned to acting. During the mid-60s, she appeared in a number of Bengali movies. This was her first role as a heroine.
The film Deya Neya (1963) introduced her to Uttam Kumar, who she would go on to work with in other films. During the same period, she also starred in Rajkumari (1970).
When she started working as an actress, Tanuja was accompanied by her mother. Earlier, she had an on-screen romance with Armaan Kohli, but this relationship never got off the ground. Eventually, Tanuja married director Shomu Mukherjee.
