Helberg was born in Los Angeles, California on December 9, 1980. He is an American of Jewish origin. He was raised by his parents Sandy and Harriet Helberg, who were actors and casting directors.
Helberg started his career as a comedian. He studied at the Atlantic Theater Company and the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He later went on to become a karate black belt scholar.
