The younger Murty was a computer science graduate from Cornell University and earned his PhD from Harvard University. He was awarded a Siebel Scholars Fellowship to support his PhD.
After graduation, Murty worked with Catamaran Ventures. He also established the Murty Classical Library of India. This is a library that offers fluid translations of ancient Indian texts. Its first collection includes poetry by Buddhist nuns.
Murty is an active philanthropist and has received several awards. His mother is an engineer and a best-selling author. She is also a philanthropist.
