She completed her early schooling at Northwest Whitfield High school, Tunnell Hill, Georgia. There, she participated in basketball, held the position of class secretary, and was named homecoming queen during her senior year of 1980-1981.
After graduating high school in 1981, she continued on with school but left before graduating. Following this experience, she participated in beauty pageants and competitions, winning the Miss Resaca Beach Poster Girl Competition (1983), finishing second to Miss Georgia USA in 1984, and taking home the title of Miss Hawaiian Tropic (1985).
