Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan is a real life hero. He was a tenacious soldier and made the ultimate sacrifice. He died in line of duty at the age of 31 years.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was born on 15 March 1977 in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. He was the only child of retired ISRO officer K. Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan. He was a graduate from the National Defence Academy.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan took part in various school activities and sporting events. He excelled in all fields and was a member of the school choir. He also graduated from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
He joined the National Security Guards (NSG) and served in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Siachen. He was also awarded the Ashik Chakra, the country’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
He joined the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the NSG on a deputation. On November 2008, he was killed in action during the Mumbai attacks.
He was the commando who led ten NSG commandos into the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, India. His funeral was held with full military honours.

Major was born on March 15, 1977, in Kozhikode, Kerala. He studied at the Frank Anthony Public School and later graduated from the ISC Science stream. He joined the National Defence Academy in Pune, Maharashtra.
He completed his training at the High Altitude Warfare school. He was promoted to lieutenant in the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment (Infantry) on July 12, 1999.
Sandeep was a good athlete and enjoyed watching movies. He was the only child of K. Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi. His father was an ISRO officer who retired.
He worked for the National Security Guards as a member of the Special Action Group (SAG). He joined the NSG in January 2007.
He remained in the unit until the end of 2012. He had served with the 7 Bihar Regiment and was a member of Oscar Squadron (No. 4 Battalion).
Sandeep was married to Neha. His mother Dhanalakshmi was not paying much attention to the television. When news about the attack in Mumbai broke out, she prayed for a successful end to the operation.
