In 1995, Wonfor stated to the Los Angeles Times that “He was very vocal” in interviews. I had an idea to listen to his interviews and get all the relevant questions answered. Then, I would ask the exact same question to each of the Beatles. It would appear that they were answering the same questions.
The Anthology helped to revive worldwide fascination in a band that was hardly forgotten. It also won Bob Smeaton and Wonfor a Grammy in 1997, for best long-form music video.
Wonfor also directed the McCartney videos, “In the World Tonight”, and “Young Boy”, as well as a McCartney concert from the Cavern Club in Liverpool. This is where the Beatles performed many of their early shows. Wonfor was also present for a Beatles “reunion”, a video of “Real Love”, a song that Lennon left unfinished and which the Beatles recorded.
He also had credits for “Band Aid 20”, a documentary about the anniversary recording of the British charity song “Do they Know It’s Christmas?” as well as “Sunday For Sammy”, a tribute to Sammy Johnson.
Wonfor was a prominent figure in British entertainment since 1980s when he directed a few episodes of “The Tube” as well as a documentary on “Shanghai Surprise,” which Harrison produced and starred Madonna and Sean Penn. Unexpectedly, his work with Harrison would lead to the largest undertaking of his professional career.
Paul McCartney called me while I was at my dad’s. He said, “Hello there, you’re alright.” “I say yes, I’m fine,” Wonfor said during a 2018 appearance at Newcastle Film Festival.
“He said, “I was talking with a mate last night.” I asked. He replied, ‘A little guy named George Harrison.’ We talked for hours and he then said, ‘We want to do history of the Beatles and that you are that man.’
